What is Serendipity Sense all about?

Have you ever wondered if there are any interesting people around you that you may want to meet? Or you just want to meet someone right now while you're out and about? Serendipity Sense is like a sixth sense that lets you "discover" other people near you. This service allows you to make that fortunate, chance encounter happen, in person -- it senses serendipity and lets you know. While you're on-the-go, grabbing a coffee, or hanging out, you can safely and easily meet new, fun, and adventurous people. We don't use an engineered algorithm to match you with someone. You make your own decision whether you find someone else interesting. By simply using your mobile phone, you can get an impression of other nearby Serendipity Sense users via immediate text messaging (while still maintaining your anonymity and privacy) and it's up to you if you want to meet offline and in person.

How does it work?

Serendipity Sense is a text (SMS) service. Using your mobile phone, you can "check-in" by texting your location (as specific or as vague as you want) to Serendipity Sense. You can then search for people who are near your location and view their profiles. When you find someone interesting, you can invite the person to text with you via "double-blind" text messages - meaning both your mobile numbers and real names are not revealed. If the person accepts your invitation, you can both simply text one another (again, your personal contact information is protected). Then you - not us- decide if you like the person. If you "connect" with each other - you can meet in person as soon as you both want. With Serendipity Sense, you are in control so you can always be in the right place, at the right time, with the right people.

I have created my profile, what do I do now?

It is as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Go out and check-in. Go out someplace and check-in by sending "@ [location of someplace] to 94949. E.g. text "@ state and allen, dallas" to 94949.

  2. Search who's nearby. Send "search" to 94949 to get a text message listing people who are nearby (5 miles).

  3. Invite someone who's nearby to a text conversation and meet in person! You can invite someone to a text conversation by texting "invite [username]" to 94949 and text with them to see if they are interesting to meet. If, so - go on and grab a coffee with them!

(see help for a full listing of commands and interesting things you can do with Serendipity Sense - please stay tuned as we are adding more fun games and interactions.)

Is it safe?

Because Serendipity Sense is committed to your safety, we do not reveal your exact location or mobile number (or any contact info for that matter.) We only provide your screen name and indicate whether you are within a certain proximity of someone. Please use sound judgment on what you reveal to others when texting or if and where you choose to meet in person. Using Serendipity Sense is as safe as meeting someone new in public. One big advantage you have with Serendipity Sense is that you have the opportunity to get a sense of the person before you actually meet in person. Please read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use to see how we protect your privacy.

Safety Tips

  • Don't share personal information that may let others know who you are until you feel comfortable.

  • Use a screen name that does give away your real identity.

  • When texting with a potential match, ask good questions to get to know them. Take your time to gain a sense of comfort with the person. You can play our "ice breaker" to break the ice. (see Help on how to play this game)

  • When you decide to meet someone for the first time, meet in a public place.

  • Text "off" to 94949 to no longer appear in search results.

  • If you encounter anyone who is abusive or threatening, use the "block" keyword (e.g. "block john25") to prevent further communication from that person and report the person to Serendipity Sense (report@serendipitysense.com)

  • If you ever feel uncomfortable with someone, do not meet in person or exchange contact info.

Can someone track me?

Serendipity Sense does not obtain your location from GPS or phone signal triangulation, and so you cannot be tracked. No one can ever find your exact location from Serendipity Sense. By "checking-in," you text your current location to us (for example, "@ State and Allen, Dallas" or just "@ Dallas") and we can tell you who is nearby your self-provided location.

Is it easy?

Serendipity Sense is as easy as texting - in fact, it is texting.

Do I need a special phone or a specific wireless carrier?

Serendipity Sense works on any mobile phone and any wireless carrier in the US who supports standard SMS messaging rates. Because you will have fun using Serendipity Sense, we recommend using an unlimited text plan from your wireless carrier.
